Movie Review-The Devils

When Ken Russell's controversial horror, cult classic, "The Devils" came out 55 years in ago in 1971, it created quite the controversy.

Any film that critiques religion, explicit sexuality and perceived blasphemy will cause an uproar!

The film is based on real events in 17th century Loudun, France which follows a charismatic priest and deformed mother superior, amid a church-state political maneuvering. It's a very fascinating film! For 55 years, anywhere between 4 to 9 minutes have been cut & censored (depending on the country). The scenes that were cut involve explicit sexual and religious desecration!

I saw this at the theatre in the Crossgates Mall when it came back in theatres for its limited run (now in its second week) and I actually enjoyed it for the most part. I could've done without the orgy sequence myself as I thought it was too much and it didn't really add anything to the story! Yes, we've seen worse and more explicit, but this cut sequence really didn't add anything to the story. I understand what Russell was going for, it just wasn't my cup of tea. The film was decent for the most part though.
